As the year comes to a close, it’s time to look back at the best web designs of 2016–2017.
With December’s site of the month still to be announced, let’s take a look at the eleven other monthly winners from this past year.
Ready? Here are the best web designs of 2016–2017.
Ringing in the new year, January’s winning web design was “Le Dernier Gaulois,” one of the best web designs of 2016–2017.
Created by Immersive Garden, a leading web design studio in France, this stunning example of web design and development tells a story through a series of animated illustrations triggered by scrolling.
February’s site of the month, Make me pulse, features STUNNING web animations using canvas technology.
The website is the portfolio of the studio itself. Like the previous entry, this web design studio is also based in France.
Ifly took home the March site of the month award. This flawless web design uses creative shapes to showcase 50 captivating destinations from around the globe.
It was designed and developed by Born05, a design agency based in the Netherlands.
April’s winner takes us on a journey through animations built with “three.js”. Falter offers a critique of modern society.
The web design was created by Wild, a design studio based in Austria.

May’s site of the month was “A Bear’s-Eye View of Yellowstone” by National Geographic, designed by Hello Monday, a web design studio in the USA.
With animations and interactive maps, the website immerses you in the journey and lives of four Yellowstone bears.
June’s winner, Resn, is an experimental web design and development project that’s a bit unsettling, with random sounds and images triggered by holding down the mouse button.
A fantastic piece by Resn, a web design studio and agency based in the Netherlands. Without a doubt, one of the best web designs of 2016–2017.
July’s site of the month was “Solarin,” a website showcasing a next-generation smartphone. With intricate 3D animations, the web design is truly impressive.
The website was designed and developed by Mediamonks, also based in the Netherlands.
August brought us summer, sun, and Diamonds, a well-deserved site of the month.
Designed and developed by RESN, it uses Canvas and video playback simultaneously, resulting in a video you can alter by pressing keys. Once again, the experience is a bit unsettling—a RESN trademark.
Kikk took the prize in September. The main feature is a bubble that grows as you scroll.
The website was designed by Dogstudio from Belgium.
“Discover your patronus,” October’s site of the month, is an interactive experience that draws you into the world of Harry Potter.
The web design was created by Active Theory, a web design studio in the USA.
And finally, with the last site of the month yet to be announced, November’s winner is Paper Planes.
This interactive experience lets you launch a virtual paper plane with a message, which can be caught by anyone in the world visiting the site.
Designed and developed, like the previous entry, by Active Theory. Outstanding work, and certainly among the best web designs of 2016–2017.
As you can see, the trend is moving increasingly toward animation, 3D, and interactivity. Still, it’s important not to overdo it—user experience should always remain as smooth and satisfying as possible.
