Fancy a beer? Let’s sample five different brews while we take a closer look at the design of a beer can.
You’ve probably noticed that beer cans are getting cooler, with more unique and creative designs than ever. Why is that? Simple. Beer has broken free from the chains of the big brands, and now brewing beer is something any artisan can take on.
So many new beer brands have emerged in the last five years that it’s nearly impossible to keep track of them all.
In the past, just a handful of brands held a monopoly. But today, whether it’s in the kitchen, the vineyards, or the beer industry, we’re seeing a boom in small and medium-sized businesses and creative artisans.
In this article, we’ll try five beer cans and analyze their can design.
We’ll play the role of your guide and embark on this beer journey together.
If you’re a beer traditionalist, this might not be the article for you—here, it’s all about creativity.

Beer can design, illustration, and packaging by graphic designer Oscar Bastida
The first beer can we’re sampling is the one graphic designer Oscar Bastida created for Wynwood beer, called Sushi Roll Pils.
It’s impossible to miss the bold, detailed illustration with its blend of Eastern and surfer vibes, and a hand-drawn typeface that ties the whole design together.
This beer features ginger, cucumber, and wasabi among its ingredients, offering a refreshing taste that pairs perfectly with sushi. Its design reflects this same spirit.
This beer can design was awarded the LAD Bronze in the Illustration and Packaging category, making it one of the standout beer can designs right now.

Beer can design and packaging by the graphic design studio Swear Words
The second can we’re tasting is the one designed by the graphic design studio Swear Words for the beer brand Kura Kura.
The design of this beer can series stands out for its simplicity and minimalism, with gradient colors and clean typography.
This beer is a complete contrast to the previous example, and I’ve included it here to show you just how many creative solutions there are for the same product.
It’s a great example of how, depending on the project and the brand’s visual identity, you can take very different creative approaches to beer can design.
This beer was awarded a Merit AGDA in the Packaging / Alcoholic Beverage – Boutique category

Beer can design and illustration by the graphic design studio Black Squid Design
The third beer can design we’re sampling comes from the creative team at Black Squid Design, created for Brewboys Brewery.
We chose this beer to highlight the importance of customizing beer cans and having a range of beers with distinct flavor profiles.
What stands out here is the carefully crafted and diverse visual identity across this series. With seven different beers under one brand, each has its own unique can design.
Black Squid Design was an AGDA finalist, making this one of the best beer can designs out there.
