This time, we’re staying in Barcelona—a true creative hotspot and home to some of the industry’s finest talents—to meet Andrés Requena and explore his approach to graphic design.
Let’s get to know Andrés Requena from Requena Office, a graphic design and visual communication studio specializing in corporate identity, naming, and editorial projects.
Code: Great to meet you, Andrés. I’ve had the chance to see your work before and I want to congratulate you on it. Still, I’d love to know a bit more about you—how did it all begin?
Andrés: I started out as an independent studio in 2014. After a long journey through agencies and studios of all kinds, I decided it was time to go out on my own.
Code: While preparing for this interview, I realized it’s hard to find much information about you beyond your work. Does that mean you prefer the focus to be on your creations rather than yourself?
Andrés: Maybe it’s just not that interesting—or maybe people haven’t asked much about it. “My creations” sounds like a small-town boutique.

Code: All of your work is outstanding, but I’d like to highlight your corporate identity project for POPOTA. Can you tell us about the creative process behind it?
Andrés: We aimed for a subtle, delicate visual metaphor to symbolically represent the iconic and popular image of an ice cream scoop. An ice cream without a cone is an incomplete experience, so we sought to evoke that shape through a gentle, clever intervention in the typography—giving the brand its own personality, distinction, and unique value.
Code: I’m really intrigued by your color choices. Why did you go for such distinctive tones?
Andrés: The client wanted clear references to Parisian macaron shops, and she’s also a big fan of Wes Anderson’s world. That’s why we used that pastel yellow throughout. As the brand grows, we’ll introduce more colors.

Code: Personally, I think the result is fantastic—and I’m sure our readers will agree. Is there anything else you’d like to highlight about the project?
Andrés: The ice creams are also completely handmade and absolutely delicious—everyone wins.
Code: And now, to wrap up, the three classic questions we ask all our guests:
Code: What’s the best thing about being a designer?
Andrés: The excitement. It pushes you to improve and keep going.
Code: And the worst?
Andrés: The excitement. Sometimes it shows too much and people take advantage of it. But you learn to hide it over time.
Code: How do you see the state of the industry?
Andrés: It’s like any other sector. There are the big agencies and consultancies with their methods and habits, taking a big slice of the pie, and then there are the small studios like us, making our way by doing things right. There’s room for everyone.

Code: That brings us to the end of the interview. My sincere congratulations on your work—we’ll be following you closely. You’re a true source of inspiration.
