GOOD IS LIKE WATER

Poster design by Ying Gao, Chaosheng Li Zhejiang Gongshang University, Hangzhou, China

This poster was created for the Gwanju Design Biennale, exploring social issues through the value and role of design in human society.

The design centers on typography, featuring a quote from Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu:

“Goodness is like water.”

What makes this poster truly unique is the typography, covered in water droplets that act as prisms, distorting the letters and creating a new visual dialogue with the viewer.

The quote is only fully legible up close, making viewer interaction and engagement a key part of the experience.

Additionally, the three-dimensional contours of the droplets form the Chinese character for “good.”

This award-winning poster received:

Red Dot in the Poster category

TDC Awards – Communication Design

DAS PLAKAT (THE POSTER)

Poster design by creative studio Fonshickmann

The Hamburg Museum of Art and Design houses a collection of posters spanning the last 200 years. For the “Das Plakat” exhibition, 400 posters were selected.

Fonshickmann studio designed a series of posters and a catalog for the event.

The central concept was to aesthetically recreate the look of posters layered on top of each other, just as we see on city streets—posters pasted over one another, peeling from the weight.

Fragments of posters peek out from the corners of this design.

The result is a highly creative and visually striking poster that perfectly captures the spirit of the exhibition and the quality of this graphic design studio.

Awarded poster:

TDC AWARDS – Communication Design

A perfect example of graphic design applied to posters.

MUSICAL THEATRE POSTER DESIGN

Poster design by creative studio better buero

This poster is part of an intercultural project that fostered an exchange between Western and Chinese culture and tradition.

The design deliberately avoids familiar Western cultural symbols, focusing instead on the process of interpreting the poster’s message.

Here, we see an Eastern dancer in an ambiguous pose—open to interpretation as either an invitation or a defensive gesture, a concept rooted in Eastern movement.

The viewer’s gaze, drawn by this ambiguity, first follows the outline of the covered eyes, then traces the circular path.

The experimental bilingual typography also echoes this circular, cross-cultural perspective.

Awarded poster:

Red Dot Winner 2021 – Poster Design

Type Directors Club New York – Certificate of Typographic Excellence 2021

A visually striking poster with a compelling message.

Our Conclusions

Time and again, we find ourselves celebrating the incredible creative field that is poster design.

If you want to see creativity at its finest, poster design is an endless source of ideas and inspiration.

This is rooted in the origins of poster creation and its later use as a tool for protest and social commentary. These two factors have made poster design a space where graphic designers enjoy greater freedom to express their creative instincts—without anyone telling them it’s too bold or too unconventional. By its very nature, poster design is intrinsically linked to a more daring, avant-garde creative approach.
