Stefan Sagmeister has been, and continues to be, without a doubt, one of the world’s leading graphic designers. Known for pushing graphic design into controversial territory with his bold and unconventional work, he began his journey in graphic design at just 15 years old.
Sagmeister studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He later received a Fulbright scholarship, which enabled him to study at New York’s Pratt Institute.
After spending two years living in Hong Kong in 1991, he eventually returned to New York, where he founded his own company, Sagmeister Inc, in 1993.
Sagmeister’s first professional experience, and what could be considered the start of his career, was as a graphic designer for Alphorn magazine, a publication aimed at Australian youth.
In 1991, he moved to Hong Kong to work with Leo Burnett’s Hong Kong Design Group, before returning to New York in 1993. There, he spent just under a year at Tibor Kalman’s renowned design studio, M&Co. His time at M&Co was brief, as Kalman left for Italy to work on Colors magazine for Benetton Group.
If there’s one thing that defines Sagmeister’s work, it’s the controversy and debate it often sparks. Perhaps his most infamous project involved asking one of his employees to have a poster Sagmeister designed for AIGA Detroit carved into his own skin—a shocking act that cemented his reputation as one of the world’s most creative and provocative graphic designers.
After his brief stint with Kalman, Sagmeister established his own graphic design studio in New York in 1993. He created corporate identities and packaging for an impressive roster of clients, including the Rolling Stones, HBO, Time Warner, Jay-Z, and many other high-profile brands and personalities.
While much of his career has been dedicated to design for the music industry, Sagmeister later diversified his portfolio. He devoted 25% of his work to the arts—creating books and publications for art galleries—another 25% to the scientific community, 25% to social causes, and the remaining 25% to his well-established expertise in music industry design.
Today, Stefan Sagmeister is a sought-after speaker, delivering talks around the globe—including at prestigious events like TED—demonstrating why he is considered one of the greatest graphic designers of all time.
Sagmeister’s style is controversial, provocative, captivating, and guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.
