{"id":23634,"date":"2016-10-13T19:00:48","date_gmt":"2016-10-13T19:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/la-ultima-fotografia-de-la-virreina\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T23:30:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T23:30:55","slug":"the-last-photograph-of-la-virreina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/en\/the-last-photograph-of-la-virreina\/","title":{"rendered":"The Last Photograph of La Virreina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just a few days ago, La Virreina Centre de la Imatge unveiled its new project.<\/p>\n<p>With this new direction comes a change in artistic leadership: from now on, Valent\u00edn Roma will take the helm and guide the project.<\/p>\n<p>Valent\u00edn Roma was selected through a competitive process to serve as the Centre\u2019s Director for the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>He has announced a shift in the Centre\u2019s philosophy, objectives, and methodology, marking a new chapter from the moment he steps in.<\/p>\n<p>He also offered a preview of some of the upcoming exhibitions and public programs planned for the Centre.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;To equate image with the visual is reductive&#8230;&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-05-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-559\" src=\"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-05-733x1024-2.jpg\" alt=\"diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-05\" width=\"733\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his own words: \u201cTo equate image with the visual is reductive&#8230; After a period focused primarily on exploring photographic culture, we are entering a new phase where we will pay attention to practices that, through film, television, literature, and more, allow us to reflect on the historical evolution and reach of images within certain artistic projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, La Virreina has become a benchmark for photographic exhibitions, offering an impressive array of photography shows in its galleries.<\/p>\n<p>A few that come to mind: Barcelona Metr\u00f2polis, Sophie Calle, Jordi Socias, Objectiu BCN, Kapuscinsky, Martin Parr, Garcia-Alix, and Colita-Ubi\u00f1a.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no wonder that, for a photography enthusiast like myself, this feels a bit like writing a farewell letter.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I\u2019m confident that even if the programming moves away from its usual focus, La Virreina will continue to feature photography exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>And if not, we\u2019ll just have to wait two years for them to realize their mistake.<\/p>\n<p>That said, among the upcoming offerings is \u201cPeople of the 20th Century\u201d by German photographer August Sander\u2014a true classic, which we\u2019ll discuss in more detail soon.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-02-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-557\" src=\"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-02-724x1024-2.jpg\" alt=\"diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-02\" width=\"724\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And to continue quoting his words, translated into Spanish:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will work from three paradigms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continuity in working formats over one-off events, encouraging the development of knowledge that can become complex, unfold over extended periods, and incorporate diverse, even dissonant, voices.<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration with those reinventing the public and aesthetic sphere within the city\u2019s context.<\/li>\n<li>Discursive independence, while also fostering cross-pollination with other concurrent areas of the program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>First things first\u2014I wish I could speak with such creative clarity.<\/p>\n<p>Following these principles, the Centre will host seminars, workshops, courses, and dialogues.<\/p>\n<p>The ground floor of the building will be dedicated to these activities, open to the public.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-01-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-556\" src=\"https:\/\/codewebbarcelona.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-01-1024x681-2.jpg\" alt=\"diseno-web-barcelona-la-virreina-01\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, all that remains is to see how the public responds to such an ambitious artistic proposal.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true that evolution only happens in times of crisis.<\/p>\n<p>So for now, we can turn our attention to Fotocolectania.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just a few days ago, La Virreina Centre de la Imatge unveiled its new project.
