Interview with Jaime Sanchez and his Pop Art<\/h2>\n

Code: Hi Jaime, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us. To start, tell us\u2014where and how did it all begin?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> It all started back in 2011, when I bought my first, very humble Canon 350D DSLR on a trip. That\u2019s when I realized photography was my calling. I began with street photography, landscapes, nature\u2014a bit of everything.<\/p>\n Code: You define your style as Pop Art. Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration and how you found your way to this particular style?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> Without a doubt, my biggest inspiration is Andy Warhol. I love the minimalism, the vibrant colors, and the simplicity of his work.<\/p>\n The journey to Pop Art has been quite varied. As I mentioned, I started out shooting all kinds of photos\u2014portraits, landscapes, street scenes\u2026 I even edited some in black and white, which is unthinkable for me now. But I believe exploring almost every photographic style led me naturally to what I do today. This process began in 2011, and in 2014 I visited a colorful LEGO exhibition in New York that made such an impact on me, I decided my photos needed to be bold and colorful. I\u2019d say LEGO was the tipping point for my style.<\/p>\n Code: Our readers would love to know how you work. Can you walk us through your creative process?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> I like to keep things simple. I don\u2019t have any rituals or quirks when it comes to brainstorming ideas for photos\u2014I just browse portfolios on Behance and look for inspiration. Sometimes it takes a day to come up with an idea, sometimes two weeks. Once I have the idea, I usually don\u2019t make sketches (mainly because I can\u2019t draw), unless a brand specifically asks for them. If it\u2019s a personal project, I go straight to the studio and shoot the photo exactly as I\u2019ve envisioned it.<\/p>\n Code: Is there a particular project you\u2019re especially proud of? Tell us about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> I\u2019m lucky in that my latest project is always the one I\u2019m most proud of. But if I had to pick just one, it would be my first series, POP!\u2014the first colorful, minimalist photos in my career. And of course, the very first photo was a popcorn box filled with LEGO pieces.<\/p>\n Code: And to wrap up, the three magic questions we ask all our guests:<\/strong><\/p>\n Code: What\u2019s the best thing about being a creative?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> Being in charge of your own mind and doing whatever you want.<\/p>\n Code: And the worst?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> Constantly having to come up with new ideas\u2014there\u2019s no real break from being creative. There\u2019s always pressure to be original.<\/p>\n Code: How do you see the state of the industry?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> If you mean the advertising industry, I find myself moving away from it and getting closer to the art world\u2014galleries and exhibitions. Working in advertising is great financially, but I like the idea of my photos being more than just ads. I guess I\u2019m a bit of a romantic that way.<\/p>\n Code: Before we finish, one last question\u2014what are you working on now? Any sneak peeks or new projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n Jaime Sanchez:<\/strong> I have a new project in mind that will be both photographic and physical\u2014in other words, I\u2019ll be bringing my photography into the tangible world.
